Sheldon 31, Breen 13 (Dies 10-G): Robert Scot’s Head of 1794. “Marred Field” lower left obverse.  Long Fraction Bar reverse.

This exceptional Sheldon-31 traces its ownership history through the collection of Herman Halpern, who’s collection was described by Stack’s in 1988 as “the finest collection of U.S. Large Cents ever to appear at public auction”. This cent next was included in the collection of R.E. Naftzger, a name nearly synonymous with the greatest of U.S. Large Cents.

While catalogued in 1988 as “Possibly Finest Known”, and included in Del Bland’s 2000 Census as tied for finest known, today, Halpern’s best S.31 is considered to be a solid CC#3.

PCGS Certification #25283626, Noyes #21800.
