SUPERB GEM FOXFIRE-POGUE 1838 NO DRAPERY QUARTER

Open Claws Reverse.

PCGS reports three 1838 No Drapery Quarters certified as MS66, with a single MS68 ranked higher. However, the MS68 has been dipped to an unnatural “blast white”. Additionally, the Newman NGC MS66+ Closed Claws (Heritage 11/2013:33360 @ $141,000) and the Jimmy Hayes NGC MS67 (Heritage 1/2009:3738 @ $46,000) both fall short of this original Gem. That leaves the Foxfire-Pogue PCGS MS66 as a strong contender for the finest known of this important first year type.

PCGS #21907589.

PROVENANCE:

  • Richard Burdick (Privately, 1/1999) to
  • Claude E. Davis, M.D., aka “Foxfire Collection” (Richard Burdick, 10/2004, Privately to Brent Pogue)
  • Pogue Family (Stack’s-Bowers 3/2017: lot 5019 @ $54,050 as PCGS MS66).
