Gem 1828 Capped Bust 50c - Second Finest O.109

Overton 109 : Date with Square Based 2, Large 8s, and the first 8 struck over a smaller 8, the obverse shared with Overton 108. Reverse with a curving line below the shield under the fourth gule or vertical stripe within the lower shield.

Probably the second best from this “Square Based 2, Large 8s” obverse, behind the Newman MS66+ 1828 O.109, sold by Heritage November 2013, lot 33456 as NGC/CAC MS66+ #2037658-023, now PCGS/CAC #25316305.

PCGS has certified a total of ten 1828 Capped Bust Half Dollars as MS66/66+, with none finer, while CAC counts four 1828 Halves in its census as MS66/66+, including two with this obverse.

Heritage, May 2003, lot 6729 at $13,800 as PCGS MS66 #50042252 to Joseph O’Connor (OCNUMIS), then to Oliver Jung. Sold with Oliver Jung’s first U.S. type collection by American Numismatic Rarities, July 2004, lot 62 at $18,400 to Don Willis (Premium Numismatics). Sold privately to Joseph O’Connor (OCNUMIS) the following year, then in 2008 to J. Clayton Shaw for his collection of Capped Bust Quarters and Half Dollars. From Clay Shaw, privately in 2017, now as PCGS #82229794, to Dale Friend in August 2017. Dale’s collection of Capped Bust Halves was offered by Heritage, this coin in the Heritage F.U.N. sale of January 2020 as lot 4205, selling at $28,800 as PCGS/CAC MS66 #35594667 again to Joseph O’Connor (OCNUMIS).
